CHOLESTEROL AND LIPID STANDARDS

Total Cholesterol:

A single measure of all the cholesterol in your blood.
Below 200 is desirable.
mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter)

High Density Lipoprotems (HDL):

This is the "good" cholesterol because it clears excess cholesterol from the blood. The higher the number the better. Low levels of HDL are associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease.
Below 40 is low and a risk.
mg/dl

Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL):

This is the "bad" cholesterol because it contributes to the building of deposits on the artery walls. High levels of LDL are associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease.
Below 130 is desirable unless patient has heart disease, then 100 or below is desirable.
mg/dl

Triglycerides:

This is a measure of the fat that is transported in your blood. When you eat a meal, your triglyceride level increases because it is the measure of any fat you have eaten.
